What Most amateurs Do
Most (99% according to many authorities) amateurs fail to make the transition weight shift move. Their golf swing consists of backswing and downswing with little or no lateral hip movement toward the target, little or no weight shift to the front foot before impact. Consequently, they pivot around their back hip joint. Their back hip has not cleared and thus interferes with their arms and forces the clubhead to approach the ball from outside the target line.
The clubhead swipes across the ball imparting slice spin. Often the clubhead strikes the ground behind the ball. It is usually decelerating. The bottom of the "transitionless" swing occurs several inches behind the ball position. "Fat" contact is almost inevitable.
Many amateurs who swing around their back hip manipulate the clubhead to prevent slice by turning it closed before impact. If they get this compensation right, the ball goes straight. When their timing is off, they slice or pull-hook. Some amateurs play this way for years but they can never become consistent.
